STUDIO ZIGZAG creates projects that help clients feel good about their spaces via the power of lighting, by design.

We collaborate with architects and developers realizing lighting schemes for commercial, cultural, residential and other projects.

Director of STUDIO ZIGZAG, Jagmel Grewal, worked as a lighting designer for 10 years in the UK before moving to Spain in 2008.
STUDIO ZIGZAG was started in 2010 as an independent lighting design studio to deliver high quality lighting design projects and solutions.

MODUS OPERANDI

The perception of space comes from light.

We work with light to support the space, reveal form and texture such that the lighting solution becomes an integral element within the architecture.

Quality of light, quality of design, quality in the control of lighting.

PROFILE

STUDIO ZIGZAG is an independent resource of creative ideas and innovative technical solutions with more than 20 years of international experience in realizing lighting design projects.

Based in the Malaga area we work on national and international projects.

We can work in both English and Spanish.

We develop the lighting scheme from initial concept through to a set of documentation to facilitate the implementation of the lighting design scheme.

We are adept at taking on the challenges that can arise in the coordination of projects with multi-discipline teams.
These have included projects with overall budgets of up to 32 million € and luminaire specifications with a value of up to 1.2 million €.

MODUS OPERANDI

Lighting design can be seen as a play between art and science.

This is at the centre of our approach of using light to enhance the perception of the space and deliver practical benefits to the user.

We are fascinated by exploring effective and elegant solutions and developing new aesthetic and technical details.

Our creativity is continually inspired by art, architecture, film, engineering, music, design and appreciating nature.

Typically STUDIO ZIGZAG will discuss the brief, objective and scope of works with the client at the outset of the project. Deliverables are then reconfirmed back to the client as part of our fee proposal. The earlier we are involved in the project the more we can bring and add value to the project and more effectively we can contribute, and then coordinate the end results.

From the very beginning of the project we take into account the environmental impact of the lighting, energy efficiency, sustainability, maintenance requirements, the user interface and budget control. We realize projects with open communication, passion and a high level of attention of detail.

Our approach is also founded on an ability to ‘speak several languages’ or ‘wear several hats’ during the coordination and gestation of the project with the various project collaborators and stakeholders in the client, design and project team(s). From initial discussions of lighting concepts, development and review of detail drawings, coordination with architecture and mechanical and electrical services, through to potential supervision of the contractor on-site.

Each project is different and our proposals are crafted for every individual case.

Subject to project criteria this phase can be integrated into the following design phase: Detail Design.

DETAIL DESIGN – DEVELOPMENT OF THE LIGHTING DESIGN CONCEPT THROUGH TO DETAIL DESIGN
Finalized development of lighting details and luminaire specification and placement.
Finalized photometric modelling, updated visualizations and light level calculations outputs.
Finalized luminaire specifications confirming full details of light sources and control gear.
Finalized plan and detail drawings annotated with luminaire control groups and methodology.
List price quotations of luminaires corresponding to the finalised lighting scheme.

CONSTRUCTION PHASE SUPPORT – COORDINATION OF IMPLEMENTATION WITH ARCHITECTURE
Responding to enquiries or requests for information from the contractor/project manager.
